Debno, Poland

The St. Michael the Archangel Church in Dębno Podhalańskie, Poland, built around the mid-15th century (circa 1490), is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a premier example of Gothic wooden architecture. Constructed from larch wood without metal nails, it is renowned for its 500-year-old, well-preserved polychrome interior paintings and unique, intricate acoustics. 
Key Historical & Architectural Features:
  • Location: Dębno, Lesser Poland (near Zakopane).
  • Construction: Built around 1490 using a horizontal log technique (mostly larch).
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site: Included as part of the “Wooden Churches of Southern Małopolska” site.
  • Polychromes: Features the oldest,, well-preserved, and extensive interior paintings on wood in Europe, featuring 77 motifs.
  • Interior Art: Contains a 16th-century triptych, a unique wood-carved tabernacle, and musical instruments.
  • Legend: Local legend suggests it was built by local robbers as an act of penance.
  • Structure: Built without nails, it is a key site among Poland’s UNESCO wooden architecture.
