Saint Maurice (died c. 286–287) was a 3rd-century Roman officer and leader of the legendary Christian Theban Legion from Egypt, venerated as a martyr for refusing to persecute fellow Christians. He is a prominent patron saint of soldiers, the Swiss Guard, and the Holy Roman Empire, often depicted in armor.
