St. Mary’s Church (Stadtkirche St. Marien) is the main church in Wittenberg where Martin Luther preached regularly starting in 1514, and is considered the “Mother Church of the Reformation”. It is the city’s oldest building, where he also got married in 1525 and baptized his children.
Key details about the church:
- Location: The church is located at Kirchplatz 20, in Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
- Significance: It was the site of the first communion served to the congregation in both bread and wine, and the first Holy Mass held in German.
- Key Features: The church contains a Reformation altar designed by Lucas Cranach the Elder.
- Current State: The original pulpit from which Luther preached is now on display at the nearby Luther House (Lutherhaus).
While Luther is associated with the town church (St. Mary’s) for his preaching, he is famously associated with the Castle Church (Schlosskirche) for posting his 95 Theses.
